What authority do ABC Investigators have?
ABC enforcement personnel have (a) full police powers - jurisdiction statewide, (b) power to inspect any ABC licensed premises, and (c) power to confiscate any contraband property. KRS 241.090
Where do I have to display my license?
Your license must be in a spot that is visible to an investigator whenever they enter the premises. KRS 243.620
What information needs to be displayed on my window?
You must have:
- licensee name
- DBA
- license number
- This information must be in the FRONT WINDOW visible from the road. They must be in 3-inch lettering. KRS 244.360
What signs am I required to display?
You are required to post “Warning Sign to Minors” KRS 244.083 as well as “Warning of Drinking Alcohol During Pregnancy” KRS 243.895 on your premises. Bars are required to post a “Persons under 21 may not remain on these premises." 804 KAR 5:070

May I sell if I have applied for a license but have not received it yet?
No. You must have a license and have it displayed in order to traffic alcohol. KRS 243.020
May I use someone else's license until I get mine?
Transfer of any license or permitting others to use any license without departmental approval is prohibited. KRS 243.630
I have a license and would like to have a promotional giveaway of free drinks. Is this allowed?
You may not give alcoholic beverages away on your premise. There are a very few exceptions to this rule. This practice is approved under certain licenses, such as a farm winery, microbrewery or educational tasting sessions. KRS 244.050
I own a club and would like to install a few slot machines and hold a poker tournament. Is this allowed?
Gambling is prohibited on ABC licensed premises, unless the activity is licensed by the Kentucky Lottery, Kentucky Horse Racing Authority for pari-mutual betting or the Department of Justice for charitable gaming. KRS 243.500
I have a license to sell alcohol. Can I purchase my alcoholic beverage inventory anywhere?
ABC licensees MUST purchase all alcoholic beverages from a Kentucky licensed liquor and wine wholesaler or beer distributor. Retailers may purchase alcohol only from a Kentucky wholesaler or distributor. KRS 244.060
How old do you have to be to sell alcohol at a convenient store or Kroger-type store?
Persons 18 and 19 years of age may stock, arrange displays and sell beer by the package in grocery stores or gas stations if under the supervision of an adult who is at least 20 years old or older, and no drinking of alcohol on the premises is allowed. KRS 244.087
How old do you have to be to bartend?
You must be 20 years old. KRS 244.090
How old do you have to be to work in a restaurant that sells alcohol?
You must be 20 years of age to take orders that include an alcoholic beverage. No one under the age of 20 may wait on any table that is ordering an alcoholic beverage. Someone under the age of 20 may clean up a table that had an alcoholic beverage, as long as someone over the age of 20 is present. KRS 244.090 (1)(c)(3)
How old do you have to be to sell tobacco products?
There is no age requirement to sell tobacco products.
